The sun will become a red giant after it exhausts the hydrogen fuel in its core, causing gravity to collapse the core and heat it enough for the surrounding hydrogen shell to ignite, releasing enough energy to swell the star.

  1. As it becomes a red giant, the sun will grow to engulf the present-day orbits of Mercury, Venus, and (likely) the Earth.

  2. These outer layers will eventually be shed, leaving behind a white dwarf—a stellar remnant whose quantum pressure prevents further gravitational collapse.
