Blood tests for Lyme disease tend to come up as false negatives in the week after a bite

It can take several weeks for Lyme antibodies to develop, which is what blood tests would be detecting. That's why many clinicians will prescribe antibiotic treatment immediately after a bite if the individual develops the characteristic bullseye rash of Lyme or gets bitten in an area of the country known to have high rates of Lyme.
