Pershing Square, a hedge fund founded and run by Bill Ackman, put short positions on Herbalife in 2012, because it believed the company was a pyramid scheme. Ackman's longtime rival and legendary investor Carl Icahn began buying Herbalife shares, causing the stock price to rise—ultimately hurting Pershing Square's short position.
