Polio, formally called poliomyelitis, comes from the Greek words for gray (polios) and marrow (myelos)—a reference to the spinal cord tissue that, when infected by the virus, causes paralysis.

PTLDS, which refers to lingering symptoms of Lyme after antibiotic treatment, is an area of active research.
