About 1 in 200 cases of infection causes paralysis. For paralysis to occur, the virus travels from the throat, intestines, and gut to infect specific cells within the spinal cord and brain stem that control movements. Within hours of invading the nervous system, paralysis can occur. The virus can be present in bodily secretions and stool for multiple weeks post-infection.

Most polio cases today are vaccine-derived rather than naturally occuring

Weakened, live virus vaccines—which aren't offered in the US—carry a risk of virus being shed in the stool. Rarely, the shed virus mutates and leads to vaccine-derived polio infections. Polio commonly spreads when virus-laden feces gets into our mouths

This highly infectious disease is transmitted from one person to another, mainly when we eat virus-laden poop particles. Less frequently, contaminated food or water can transmit the virus, or people can be infected via respiratory droplets (from coughing or sneezing).

Improved 19th-century sanitation meant kids encountered polio later, with worse results

Almost all children likely used to contract poliovirus, but scientists suggest that when infants encountered it very early in life—due to poorer conditions and hygiene—they still had some maternal protection from pregnancy or through breastmilk, so the symptoms were more flu-like.

Oral polio vaccines cause approximately 250 to 500 polio cases per year globally

Live, weakened polioviruses in the oral vaccine can very rarely mutate into a disease-causing form and lead to vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis. This oral vaccine is not available in the United States.

Post-polio syndrome occurs decades after infection but isn't contagious

Affecting adults who contracted polio as children, this disorder can occur 15 to 40 years later, leading to slow, irreversible muscle weakening. Some research estimates that between 25% and 40% of polio survivors go on to develop this condition.

Wild polio virus is only endemic in two places. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the last two countries with naturally occurring polio cases. About 1 in 5 infected people develop symptoms from West Nile, including symptoms such as fatigue, head and body aches, and vomiting. But around 1% of patients develop severe complications such as encephalitis or meningitis, which can be life-threatening. Those who are most likely to become severely ill are people over age 60.

Humans are the only known reservoir of poliovirus

The virus has not been found in any other species, which makes humans the only known reservoir for polio. In laboratory settings, nonhuman primates have also been infected with the virus, but there's no evidence that they contract the virus in nature.

Only one strain of wild poliovirus continues to infect humans

Three strains of polio used to regularly infect humans, but two of the strains were declared eradicated in 2015 and 2019, respectively. In 2019, world health leaders estimated complete polio eradication—if achieved—would save $14B by 2050.

About 20% of people infected with cholera have severe symptoms

That's according to studies from outbreaks in Bangladesh. Most people who contract the disease have mild or moderate symptoms, or none at all. Yet anyone infected with the disease-causing bacteria can shed the pathogens in their feces for a few days, or even up to around 10, seeding the environment with bacteria.

Wastewater testing has detected genetic evidence of polio, triggering vaccine boosters

Sampling of wastewater in London in 2022 detected fragments of polio virus, suggesting a vaccine-derived version of polio may be circulating. No one became ill, but the finding did trigger calls for a renewed booster inoculation campaign.

Polio, formally called poliomyelitis, comes from the Greek words for gray (polios) and marrow (myelos)—a reference to the spinal cord tissue that, when infected by the virus, causes paralysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a decrease in immunizations in the US and worldwide

Public health funds and resources that were diverted to COVID-19 response reduced efforts to combat polio and vaccinations for polio and other diseases declined during the pandemic, putting more people at risk for polio.

Adults usually have some immunity to HFM Disease—but can still spread it

In 2025, certain eastern states including Virginia and West Virginia reported a sizable uptick in their HFMD cases, particularly in their schools and daycare centers, though the reason for the larger outbreaks remains unknown. Jonas Salk developed the first successful polio vaccine—and tested it on himself

The American medical researcher developed the inactivated virus vaccine from 1952 to 1955 and proved that it could prevent disease. He tested the virus on himself and his family in 1954 and then carried out formal clinical trials on more than 1.3 million children.

The oral, live virus vaccine is the most robust but carries more risks

The live virus vaccine, delivered via oral drops, induces the best protection in the body. Because it includes a live, weakened form of the virus there's an extremely small risk it can sicken recipients and potentially cause paralysis. Needle-free polio vaccines were offered in Afghanistan for the first time in 2026

Fear of needles has been one barrier to eradicating polio in Afghanistan. Vaccinators are now using a needle-free jet injector to deliver the vaccine through the skin—an approach that's previously been used in other locations. The inoculation includes the inactivated virus vaccine (the vaccine without any live virus in it).

A rare measles complication is that the virus can linger in the body for years after apparent recovery and continue to replicate—leading to a progressive and fatal breakdown of the central nervous system that can occur decades after the initial infection.

HFMD symptoms typically begin to show up 3-6 days after exposure

Fever is often the first symptom and then painful sores may develop a day or two later. Coxsackie A16 is currently the most common enterovirus that leads to the disease, though there are several other enteroviruses that can cause it as well.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is part of the same virus family as polio

These viral infections are both caused by enteroviruses, which are a group of single-stranded, non-enveloped RNA viruses. Several different enteroviruses are known to cause this condition, including Coxsackie virus A16, Enterovirus 71, and Coxsackie virus A6.

HFMD can survive on surfaces for days at a time

That's why the virus can be transmitted via fomites—surfaces that have virus on them like doorknobs, kids toys, etc. These viruses are resilient—they are often even resistant to freezing (and are frequently stored at freezing temperatures in lab settings).

Live virus vaccines predated polio—that's how we vaccinate against smallpox

Since 1796, smallpox vaccines have used a live poxvirus related to smallpox. Yellow fever vaccines have used a live weakened form of the virus responsible for yellow fever since 1937.

Although rare, HFMD can spreads in pools due to poor bathroom hygiene

In pools with inadequate levels of chlorine, this disease can spread via the poop-to-mouth route, though this isn't one of the most common ways the disease is transmitted. People can become infected by swallowing contaminated pool water after little kids (or their parents) don't do an adequate job removing virus-laden feces from the child before the child enters the water.

Measles infection can cause long-term immune system “amnesia”

The measles virus attacks the body's immune system, including preying on T and B cells in the lymphatic system. These cells hold memories of past infections, which can be degraded as the virus destroys them. This leaves patients susceptible to other infections for a year or longer.

Measles is one of the most contagious preventable diseases—it was eliminated in the US in 2000, but it is now making a resurgence due to declining vaccination rates.

Hand, foot, and mouth is usually seasonal—peaking in summer—but not always

This painful, contagious disease most commonly has outbreaks in summer and early fall in the US because the enteroviruses that cause disease can most readily survive and be transmitted in warmer, humid conditions. It can still show up throughout the year, however.

Measles symptoms range from fever to pneumonia and encephalitis

While less common, most measles-related deaths come from secondary conditions such as pneumonia (one to six cases per 100 patients) and encephalitis (one case per 1,000 patients). Blindness, which is rare, may arise from corneal ulceration.

Leprosy symptoms may appear 20 years after infection, so contact tracing isn't possible.

The highly contagious disease is caused by several viruses and it primarily affects little kids. It causes red spots in and around the mouth, hands, feet, and even the buttocks. They often become painful water-filled blisters that can burst and cause small ulcers. Eating and drinking is uncomfortable for about a week so patients need to be careful not to become dehydrated.

Mid-Atlantic states saw a surge of hand, foot, and mouth disease in 2025 for as-yet unknown reasons. Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey, reported elevated outbreak numbers in 2025 as compared to other recent years, but since the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not require mandatory reporting of positive HFMD cases—unlike strictly notifiable diseases like measles—it's hard to truly know the extent of the outbreaks and how significant the caseload is as compared to prior years across the region or country.

In 2012, a virus that causes HFMD may have killed dozens of kids in Asia

More than 50 young children in Cambodia died in spring 2012 for unknown reasons, but laboratory testing of samples available from a limited number of those children came back positive for Enterovirus 71. That virus, which can cause HFMD, is known to cause severe complications among some people who contract the disease. But health officials concluded that poor baseline health and then incorrect treatment using steroids helped exacerbate their condition, helping lead to the deaths.

Most people breathe in hundreds of Aspergillus fumigatus spores daily without getting sick—it’s a common microscopic fungus in our environment. But people who are severely ill, including those who have undergone an organ transplant, are at risk of developing infections from these spores.

Children under 5 account for 76% of all malaria deaths in Africa

The main hypothesis for why the disease hits this age group the hardest is that children this young have still-developing immune systems. Pregnant women and people with HIV/AIDS are also at higher risk of severe infection.

More than 1 in 7 people worldwide have had Lyme disease

Research published in 2022 suggests that 14.5% of the world's population has contracted Lyme disease. Researchers arrived at that estimate by analyzing the presence of Lyme disease antibodies (indicating prior infection) across 89 studies conducted between January 1984 and December 2021. Horses can—rarely—get West Nile, too

The animals can contract the virus via infected mosquito bites, but for horses there are four vaccines available. Though West Nile's often asymptomatic or mild in horses, the disease can sometimes be deadly, killing via severe neurological inflammation. There are no reported instances of people becoming sickened by infected horses or vice-versa.
