A return to Uranus

There's been only one mission to Uranus before—Voyager 2 passed by the ice giant in 1986 before heading off into interstellar space. NASA's recent planned itinerary for space missions lists Uranus as the highest priority over the next decade. The seventh planet is 20 times as far from the sun as Earth, and researchers say its study will shed light on how the outer half of the Solar System formed.

Despite being called 'ice giants,' Uranus and Neptune do not contain plentiful frozen water—the term refers to their abundance of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium.

James Webb telescope shows new views of Uranus

Following in the footsteps of the Neptune image released in 2022, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has taken a stunning image of the solar system’s other ice giant, the planet Uranus. The new image features dramatic rings as well as bright features in the planet’s atmosphere.

While published images have suggested that Neptune is much bluer than Uranus, the two ice giants are a similarly pale shade of greenish-blue.

Observations from Hubble contributed to Pluto's demotion from planetary status
