The NYSE was created in response to "The Panic of 1792," which was arguably the first financial panic in the United States.
The Panic of 1792 was triggered by former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury William Duer's attempt to corner the market on government bonds and bank stocks, using heavily leveraged credit. A wave of New York defaults followed.
Today, the NYSE is known as one of the most important financial institutions in the world.
