The 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act was the first US law to ban immigration by nationality, targeting Chinese laborers who had built much of the transcontinental railroad.
The 1924 Johnson-Reed Act set nationality-based quotas favoring Western Europeans while excluding Asian immigrants entirely.
The 1965 Hart-Celler Act scrapped those quotas in favor of per-country visa caps, quickly diversifying the origins of US immigrants.
Since 2012, presidents have relied on executive actions such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals rather than new legislation to address undocumented immigration.
