Additional insights we found via Pew Research Center

  1. Immigrants made up 13.8% of the US population in 2022, up from a low of 4.7% in 1970.

  2. The 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act ended a system that favored Northern and Western Europe, opening legal immigration from Asia and Latin America.

  3. Only six states—Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Maine, Montana, and Vermont—had the same top immigrant-origin country in both 1920 and 2022.
