At the Large Hadron Collider, scientists have transformed lead into gold—a process known as chrysopoeia, which alchemists sought for centuries.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Newsweek

  1. In near-miss collisions, electromagnetic fields around fast-moving lead ions produced particles of light—photons—which can sometimes trigger the ejection of three protons via particle interactions, transforming the ions into gold.

  2. About 172 billion gold nuclei have been created via this electromagnetic dissociation, but they all collided with the walls of the collider and almost instantly disintegrated into smaller, more stable particles.
