The Large Hadron Collider is the world's largest cryogenic system, which uses 10,000 metric tons of liquid nitrogen and 120 metric tons of helium to cool 36,000 metric tons of magnets to temperatures colder than outer space.

Additional insights we found via CERN

  1. Across three stages, five "cryogenic islands," and weeks of cooling, the magnets are successively cooled using a closed liquid helium system, in which the noble gas is repeatedly cooled before being injected into the magnets.

  2. Helium continues to circulate at about 16 liters per second during the collider's operation to maintain the magnets' temperature and ensure the transmission of electrical current with zero resistance.
