The skinniest house in America was built out of spite

John Hollensbury was a brickmaker in the early 1800s, living in Alexandria, Virginia. He also had the misfortune of living next to an alley around 7.5 feet wide where horse-drawn carriages scraped against his wall and rowdy loiterers stood by. To solve his problem, he built what is now known as the Alexandria Spite House. Read more about the home created to end neighborhood riffraff.
