FDR established the Works Progress Administration in 1935 to put millions of unemployed Americans back to work during the Great Depression.
The grants included funding for musicians, actors, and writers, and for over 5,000 artists.
Artists initially painted posters by hand, but a silkscreening method was adapted in 1936, allowing divisions to print as many as 600 posters in a single day.
Over the program's history, more than 2 million posters were printed from 35,000 designs, though only about 2,000 are known to survive today.
