During coral bleaching, corals sacrifice their food source and expel colorful microorganisms to protect themselves, a phenomenon that resembles an organism's immune system attacking itself.

Findings

Additional insights we found via California Academy of Sciences

  1. Microorganisms called zooxanthellae are in a symbiotic relationship with coral polyps and provide them with food created through photosynthesis.

  2. When ocean temperatures or sunlight exceed optimal levels, zooxanthellae release harmful chemicals that irritate coral cells, triggering their expulsion.

  3. Without the coloration provided by zooxanthellae, corals become white.
