While each version is assigned a code, such as 6.8.0-rc7, animal codenames provide more memorable, fun identities for each version. Some Linux distributions have also adopted this philosophy and have used alliterative nicknames to convey the distro's characteristics, such as Ubuntu's "Warty Warthog," described as "functional if not pretty."
