Findings

Additional insights we found via PBS Space Time

  1. Because the force of gravity varies with distance, different parts of the Earth are pulled by varying degrees based on their distance to the moon, resulting in the ocean's water being pulled toward the Earth-moon axis.

  2. High tides are observed on opposite sides of the Earth along the Earth-moon axis, while low tides are observed perpendicular to this axis.

  3. Without significant water to be displaced by the moon's tidal, or differential gravitational, forces, most lakes do not experience noticeable tides.
