Because of the misalignment between the plane of Earth's orbit around the sun and the plane of the moon's orbit around the Earth, the three objects are only perfectly aligned four to seven times a year, at locations in the moon's orbit called nodes.
The ecliptic season—the span of time during which the sun, Earth, and moon are closest to perfectly aligned and can produce solar and lunar eclipses—occurs twice a year for about 35 days.
Because 12 lunar cycles last about 11 fewer days than a calendar year, if an ecliptic season starts at the beginning of January, there may be as many as five solar eclipses in a calendar year.
Any time the moon orbits between the sun and the Earth outside of the ecliptic seasons, its position is either too high above or too low below Earth's orbital plane for its shadow to produce a solar eclipse.
