Watch how seed cotton is collected and processed into cotton fibers, feed for livestock, and cooking oil.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Science Channel

  1. Cotton takes about five months to grow, after which it is picked and bunched into rectangular blocks called modules.

  2. At cotton gins, moisture is removed from packed seed cotton in a heat box before it passes through a wad buster and burr machine, which break up the cotton and remove debris.

  3. Within gin stands, the fluffy lint is pulled from the seed cotton using circular saws, leaving behind seeds that can be sold to feed dairy cows and other livestock, or processed into cottonseed oil.

  4. Lint is then sent into a tramper, which compresses it into bale-shaped boxes weighing 500 pounds each.

  5. Cotton samples are collected from each bale for analysis by the USDA, which assigns a grade that determines how it will be processed.
