In 1676, Danish astronomer Ole Rømer determined that light did not travel instantaneously by observing a delay in the appearance of eclipses on Jupiter when it was farther from Earth.

By studying the orbits of Jupiter's moons, Rømer predicted when they would block some sunlight and produce solar eclipses on the gas giant.
Because solar eclipses occurred several minutes later than predicted when Earth and Jupiter were more distant and earlier than predicted when they were closer together, Rømer reasoned that light took different amounts of time to travel different distances.
Despite determining that the speed of light was not infinite, Rømer was unable to calculate its value because he lacked knowledge of Earth's orbital diameter.
