At the Brandenburg Gate in 1987, President Ronald Reagan famously challenged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall," casting the Berlin Wall as a symbol of the Communist era and Germany's Cold War division.

  1. Former White House speechwriter Peter Robinson shared that many top US officials opposed Reagan saying the line, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Despite many protests, Reagan approved the line and insisted on keeping it.

  2. The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 to prevent East Germans from escaping the Communist system by fleeing to West Berlin. The wall stood around 12 feet high and had hundreds of guard towers, 55,000 landmines, and barbed-wire reinforcements.

  3. Two years later, in 1989, East and West Germans broke down the infamous Berlin Wall.
