A database of people who saved Jewish lives during the Nazi regime

Searchable by name and location, this database includes articles and photographs of people who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. In 1963, Yad Vashem launched a worldwide project to pay tribute to these "Righteous Among the Nations." According to this database, more than 16,000 people, ranging in profession from farmers to governesses, worked to preserve the lives of Jews in Nazi-occupied areas.

Hitler died by suicide on April 30, 1945

Adolf Hitler, facing imminent defeat as Soviet troops closed in on Berlin, killed himself in a final act of cowardice—by gunshot and cyanide—alongside his wife Eva Braun in his Führerbunker on April 30, 1945. Their bodies were doused in petrol and burned in the Chancellery garden.

Nov. 9 and 10, 1938, saw Nazi members break into Jewish stores and homes across Germany in retaliation for the assassination of a German diplomat by a Polish Jew.
