The showgirl archetype arose in 19th-century France

The word first appeared in the mid-1700s to describe women behaving in a "showy" manner, but it wasn't until the late 1800s that the current definition for a performer became standardized, thanks to Parisian variety shows that often featured the high-kicking women.
