Boasting over 1,600 major volcanoes—more than any other planet in the solar system—Venus rotates in the opposite direction as Earth, potentially due to a major collision during its formation that flipped the planet upside-down. The planet's rotation also makes days on Venus last longer than its entire year.

The nebular hypothesis proposes that a swirling cloud of gas and dust coalesced into a dense center, forming a star amid nuclear fusion. Lighter elements were blown far from the star while heavier elements remained nearby, serving as primary materials for terrestrial and jovian planets, respectively.

Did Mars ever look like Earth?

Mars formed at the same time as the rest of the solar system, about 4.6 billion years ago. Today, Mars is a cold, dry world with a thin atmosphere. However, there is evidence that Mars was once much more habitable, covered in flowing rivers a large bodies of water. Scientists believe over time the planet lost its magnetic field, leading to the loss of atmosphere and ultimately the evaporation of water.

Research shows Venus would be hotter if some of its CO₂ were swapped out

The planet's atmosphere—whose density is 92 times that of Earth's—is 96.5% carbon dioxide. Since these molecules all capture the same subset of infrared radiation emitted from Venus's surface, radiation outside this range escapes, demonstrating the increased impact that diverse greenhouse gas composition has on planetary warming.

Earth is the only planet in our solar system with fire

And while the sun seems like fire, and other planets have volcanoes, the sun and lava aren't the same thing as fire. To produce fire, a planet needs three ingredients: oxygen, fuel, and heat. No other planet has all three.

How neutron stars resemble Earth, including harboring an atmosphere and 'mountains'

These stars maintain an atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, and carbon at approximately 2,000,000 degrees Celsius (3,600,000 degrees Fahrenheit), only a few thousandths of a millimeter thick, which envelops "mountains" about a millimeter high. Its interior consists of an inner and an outer crust surrounding inner and outer cores, all held together by enormous gravitational forces despite spinning multiple times a second.

Heat slowly moves through Earth's mantle like softened wax

Energy trapped during Earth's formation and released via the radioactivity of elements is carried by convection currents towards the surface, while cooler, denser material sinks. The planet's core is almost as hot as the sun's surface.

Extraterrestrial volcanoes spew material present during their formation

Unlike Earth's volcanoes that release lava, cryovolcanoes on distant moons erupt cold jets of water, ammonia, and other light gases present during the formation of their host planet. The movement of internal heat produced during formation is thought to drive icy plume movement.

Jupiter’s formation included accretion and migrations across the solar system

One theory of Jupiter’s formation involves the planet spiraling inwards from the asteroid belt, gathering material and disrupting the initial formation of terrestrial planets. Saturn’s gravitational pull would then reverse its course.

Earth’s tilt and orbit cause the sun to create a figure-eight pattern

The shape—called an analemma—can be obtained by photographing the sun from the same location and time daily for a year. The Earth's eccentricity created the analemma's width, and its tilt shifts the sun's height in the sky over the seasons.

Asteroids are the rocky remains of the solar system's formation

These celestial bodies were not integrated into the precursors of planets about 4.6 billion years ago and instead continue to orbit the sun, primarily within a band between Mars and Jupiter—the asteroid belt.

When it formed 4.5 billion years ago, Jupiter was twice its current size

Its original size was deduced from the orbits of its moons, Amalthea and Thebe. The planet's magnetic field was also 50 times stronger than today, or 400 times stronger than Earth's.

The sun is not as exceptional as once believed, but it remains rarer than most stars

Once believed to be the center of the universe, the sun is a G-class star, the same category to which about 6% of the Milky Way's stars belong. However, the sun is younger than 85%, more massive than 95%, and more metal-rich than about 93% of all stars. Unlike the sun, half of all stars also exist in multi-star systems.

Are there any planets in the universe that aren’t round?

We think of all planets as spheres, but do they have to be spheres? To be classified as a planet, an object has to be sufficiently massive to reach a spherical shape through gravity. However, this doesn't mean they're perfectly round; for example, Earth has a slight equatorial bulge caused by centrifugal force from its rotation.
