The solar system formed between 4.5 and 4.6 billion years ago

Its age is best estimated by studying meteorites from the early formation period of the planetary system, including Erg Chech 002 (4.565 billion years old) and NWA 11119 (4.5648 billion years old). Solar analysis and stellar evolution models estimate the sun's age to be approximately 4.57 billion years.

The nebular hypothesis proposes that a swirling cloud of gas and dust coalesced into a dense center, forming a star amid nuclear fusion. Lighter elements were blown far from the star while heavier elements remained nearby, serving as primary materials for terrestrial and jovian planets, respectively.

Jupiter’s size forced the creation of modified planetary formation models

Since solar winds remove gases from protoplanetary disks within millions of years of a star’s birth, models needed to provide a mechanism to jump-start Jupiter’s formation and growth. The solution involved incorporating pebbles of matter into the disk.

Jupiter’s formation included accretion and migrations across the solar system

One theory of Jupiter’s formation involves the planet spiraling inwards from the asteroid belt, gathering material and disrupting the initial formation of terrestrial planets. Saturn’s gravitational pull would then reverse its course.

While the sun's gravity keeps the planets in orbit, their gravity also pulls on the sun, causing it and everything else in the solar system to orbit around a mutual balance point called the barycenter—the true center of the solar system.

Some research suggests Jupiter formed near Uranus’ current orbit and migrated inward

Scientists from the University of Zurich and NCCR PlanetS proposed the mechanism after using computer modeling to replicate Jupiter’s formation to match its observed concentration of heavy elements. The work may help understand how Jupiter-like exoplanets exist near host stars.

Electron neutrinos are byproducts of the nuclear reactions within the sun's core. Based on the sun's energy output, scientists modeled reaction rates and predicted neutrino production, but the observed values were consistently one-third the predicted values. Experiments later showed that these neutrinos could change into other types on their way to Earth, causing the discrepancy.

Interactions between solar storms and Earth's magnetic field create auroras

Solar storms on the Sun's surface produce clouds of electrically charged particles, some of which make their way to Earth. Those trapped in Earth's magnetic field accelerate toward the north and south poles, colliding with atmospheric atoms and molecules in the process, which produces light.
