Scientists validated Albert Einstein's theory of gravity by measuring the apparent positions of stars via their starlight as it traveled near the sun on its way to Earth during a total solar eclipse.

By comparing the apparent locations of stars at night, when starlight did not have to pass near the sun, and during the daytime solar eclipse, when they did pass near the sun, scientists confirmed that light is deflected by massive objects warping the fabric of spacetime—a prediction of general relativity.
For hundreds of years prior to the 1919 total solar eclipse in Sobral, Brazil, Isaac Newton's laws of gravity and motion accurately predicted every observation and measurement of orbits, but advances in technology enabled more precise measurements and revealed anomalies such as Mercury's orbit.
The validation of general relativity, which overturned Newton's picture of gravity, reframed scientists' understanding of the universe and made Albert Einstein a celebrity and international pop culture icon.
