While most red blood cells are round, some are abnormally shaped as they move through smaller pathways or as a result of different conditions and pathologic processes, such as sickle cell anemia.
Cornified cells found in hair, nails, and the outermost layer of skin destroy their nuclei and other cellular contents to make room for keratin, which provides durability and structural support.
