Ulysses S. Grant unsuccessfully attempted to run for a third term in 1880

After serving two terms from 1869 to 1877, Grant sought the Republican nomination again in 1880. Though he led the early convention ballots, party opposition blocked him, and James A. Garfield ultimately emerged as the nominee.
