Ordinary bee larvae can develop into queen bees upon being fed royal jelly

Royal jelly is a protein-rich, yellowish substance produced by worker bees in a honeybee hive. After three days, only a few continue receiving the jelly, which triggers the development of ovaries and other traits not found in workers. The first candidate to emerge becomes queen.
