Dilution fridges create the colder-than-space environments needed for quantum computers by successively lowering temperatures across layers plated with gold, which reduces heat transfer via radiation and gives them a chandelier-like appearance.

Additional insights we found via SciShow

  1. Relying on technologies found in the cryogenic systems that supercool magnets in particle accelerators, dilution fridges mix and unmix isotopes of helium to bring temperatures to below 10 millikelvin.

  2. Because quantum computers are fragile and can be destabilized by radiation, a small increase in temperature, and collisions with air molecules, the physical processor of a quantum computer sits in a vacuum at the lowest, coldest level of the dilution fridge.
