  1. Dr. Roy J. Plunkett discovered that tetrafluoroethylene gas in a pressurized cylinder had unexpectedly and spontaneously turned into a slippery, heat-resistant, white solid in the lab. The substance turned out to be polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)—later known as Teflon.

  2. In more than 20 states, the thousands of substances known collectively as forever chemicals are defined by their chemical bonds—they must have at least one carbon atom that is bonded with fluorine.

  3. Gore-Tex clothing originally relied on forever chemicals, formally known as PFAS, to keep rain and other substances out. The company has said it has moved to using PFCs, which the US EPA says are non-toxic and do not have harmful health effects.

  4. PFAS, forever chemicals, are being phased out of products including some dental flosses and even some ski waxes.
