Nitinol is an example of a shape memory alloy, which can be trained to 'remember' a specific shape and, if deformed, revert to it upon being heated.

Created from nickel and titanium, nitinol can be deformed and reverted to its original shape repeatedly because of a solid-to-solid phase transformation, in which the atoms that make up the solid change their arrangement upon absorbing energy without the object turning into a liquid.
By altering the nickel-to-titanium ratio, the temperature at which nitinol reverts to its original shape can be controlled to suit the applications and environments in which it will be used.
Nitinol has been used in stents, where it expands to keep narrowed blood vessels open, and some showerheads to regulate hot water and prevent unintentional burns.
At NASA's Glenn Research Center, tires incorporating shape memory alloys have been used to construct airless tires that can withstand the strain of heavy loads and excessively deform without sustaining permanent damage.
